Comparison Methodology

How did we complete the comparison of DivvyHQ vs. Contently? Our staff dug into various resources, including company websites, free trials, knowledge bases, review sites, and additional sources. The full report and methodology is available here: Content Marketing Platforms: DivvyHQ vs. the Alternatives.

DivvyHQ vs. the Alternatives

In deciding what features to spotlight, we included the tools and features that content, marketing and communications teams need to do their job. Consider the criteria to be similar to those used by analyst firms Gartner and Forrester for the annual reports they publish on content marketing platforms (CMPs).

While we did our best to gather all available information, but we certainly may have missed something. Not all platforms provide all details to the public.

If you’re a staff member for Contently, and you see something we got wrong, leave us a comment. We’ll fix it.

Now that we’ve defined the how, let’s get started.

Enterprise Pricing

Cost is always a leading factor in technology procurement. Platforms have different categories of pricing, usually based on users. DivvyHQ has a per-seat or unlimited seat pricing, and you can invite non-users to view read-only access.

Unfortunately, Contently does not publish its pricing structure. From anecdotal accounts (former Contently customers who came to Divvy), Divvy’s software subscriptions are more affordable.

Content Ideation

Ideation is a central aspect of content marketing production. With features that support this, your team will be able to handle these tasks more efficiently. DivvyHQ offers a central repository for ideas, intake forms for anyone to request content, and access to content recommendations. Contently’s platform includes all these features as well.

Content and Editorial Planning Capabilities

Taming the content beast requires thoughtful planning, with a robust content calendar being the primary weapon. Your calendar offers a holistic view of all content marketing campaigns, projects and assets.

DivvyHQ and Contently both include a dynamic content calendar interface that gives content managers a high-level master view, and producers the ability to drill into their specific assigned projects.

Within this category of the comparison, both platforms have similar features:

  • Drag and drop entries (i.e., projects, tasks, etc.)
  • Robust filtering
  • Flexible architecture for different calendar views for different users
  • Content metadata management (allows for filtering and reporting of data)
  • Project and task prioritization
  • Duplication of projects
  • Multiple views (list, calendar, etc.)
  • Color-coding
  • Campaign planning and management

Noteworthy differences between platforms are that DivvyHQ has shareable calendar views for non-users, while Contently has resource management functionality.

Workflow and Collaboration Offerings

A content marketing solution streamlines content workflows and collaboration through automation. These features are great for productivity and efficiency. Both platforms have many of the same features:

  • Task management
  • Custom workflow builder
  • Automated workflow scheduling, notifications, and reminders
  • Commenting with @mentions in content to tag users
  • Real-time browser notifications

Content Production and Asset Storage Features

Production and asset storage provide support for workflows and content management. DivvyHQ and Contently both have:

  • Content archive and auditing
  • Unlimited storage for content and assets
  • Asset library
  • HTML content editor
  • Change tracking and version history
  • Social post editor

Publishing Functions and Integrations

Integrations save time and resources because they enable two platforms to communicate and share information. Below, you can review the available integrations for both solutions.

DivvyHQ Integrations

  • WordPress
  • Zapier
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • SharePoint
  • Box
  • Episerver
  • Kentico
  • Microsoft Outlook calendar
  • Google calendar
  • iCal

Contently Integrations

  • WordPress
  • Zapier
  • Google Drive
  • Microsoft Outlook calendar
  • Google calendar
  • iCal

Both platforms also offer an open API, which makes custom integrations much more manageable.

Content and Team Performance Analytics

Content analytics provide insights into your content and your team’s performance. DivvyHQ offers this functionality with robust features and over 100 possible platform connections. The platform can aggregate data from multiple sources to one dashboard. You can leverage internal production and time tracking reports to stay abreast of your team’s output.

Contently also has content performance and team production analytics, but are lacking in the time tracking arena..

Service and Support

Service and support are essential when deploying new software. Here’s how the two solutions stack up. Both offer:

  • Live onboarding teams
  • Content strategy review and recommendations
  • Dedicated support teams
  • Analytics analysis and recommendations
  • Online support chat

Setup and Implementation Ease

How challenging will it be to implement your content marketing software? The easier, the better, right? DivvyHQ setup takes less than four hours and doesn’t require any technical resources or programming. Contently has a longer than four-hour configuration, but no programming is necessary.

Security is a consideration with bringing on any new software. DivvyHQ and Contently include the following security measures:

  • Robust user permissions and rules
  • SSO (single sign-on)

Additionally, DivvyHQ offers two-factor authentication.

Everything Else

As for the miscellaneous category of our comparison report, neither platform would require the hiring of a full-time employee to manage the systems, and both have mobile-friendly experiences for users on the go.

We do also want to mention one key difference that may impact your buying decision. Historically, Contently’s focus has revolved around connecting companies to freelance writers to aid in executing their content initiatives. They have solid functionality to facilitate both the sourcing of writers and paying them when each writing project is completed.

So from a buyer’s perspective, considering that both platforms have very comparable functionality to serve the core needs of content teams, your decision may come down to whether you regularly need to find writers to augment your internal staff. If you have writers and subject matter experts on staff, or you have existing freelancer relationships, then Contently’s writer network may be irrelevant and a waste of budget for the service offering.

DivvyHQ vs. Contently: What’s Right for You?

If you just compare features, Divvy and Contently check a lot of the same boxes and may seem to be very similar, but we’re not. To determine which platform is ultimately better it really comes down to which platform is more intuitive, streamlined, and easy to adopt and start using.

Obviously, we have some very strong opinions about which platform is better in all these areas, and we know what we frequently hear from our customers. However, we try to keep these comparisons concise, friendly, and as objective as possible. So, any opinion-based thoughts from our customers…we’ll keep to ourselves. But if you’re on the fence about using Divvy or Contently, we strongly recommend you sign up for a trial of each. And if you book a demo with them or us, I would ask about their product roadmap and see what innovative features they will be launching soon. And if you ask us that, we may need to schedule a looong call, because we have a TON! :slightly_smiling_face:
